The good and bad

A picture I found of my grandparents. It was taken a few years ago at my moms house.

My grandpa's been doing much, much better. At one point, I think he was ready to give up but as of the last few weeks, things have been looking way up.

He was having problems with his feet swelling and instead of going to the Dr., he was having my grandma put ice on them. She was putting ice on 4-5 times a day and wasn't putting anything underneath the ice packs. He ended up with ice burns on his feet. Seeing that he's also diabetic, didn't help matters any. He's been going up to the hospital every other day for wound care. Last week they got one foot completely cleared up and the other one is close. A few more visits and he'll be good to go.

Since he's been sick, he hasn't left his house. He would go outside and sit in his swing a little but not much. So last Thurs when he went out, my grandma thought nothing of it, just that he was going to sit outside. After awhile, she thought she had better go check on him and low and behold, he was down the road, having a rest on his walker. I guess you could say he got an itch and took his first big steps to recovery.

After his walk, he decided to go grocery shopping w/ my grandma. His first time back into a grocery store in months. This weekend was quit a weekend for him.

Monday he did another round of chemo and besided being there 3 hours more then planned, he did good. When he got up Tues, he wasn't doing so hot and decided to have my grandma go do the shopping without him. When she got home, he had decided he wanted to go to lunch (YESSSSSSSSSSSS!!!). His boss came over a long time ago and gave them a girt certificate for Applebees and he's been waiting for the day to take my grandma out again. It was very exciting to have my grandma call me yesterday and hear the excitement in her voice that my grandpa got to go to lunch.

Bad news, we think he over did himself yesterday. He was in bed sick today. He did get up to the hospital for his wound care but no walks. It's understandable though. He's accomplished a lot in the last few days. He's starting to tell his stories again and of course since it's almost school time, his most favorite is to tell about how he walked to school barefoot and yes, in the snow, uphill both ways.. LOL.. Bare foot and snow I believe 100%.

On the 14th they are going to do another CAT scan to see how much of the cancer they have gotten rid of so far. The tumor on his neck is almost gone, at least by looking at (the Dr. says). The question is, how much of it in the lung has gone. If they can operate on the lung to get rid of whats left, they are also going to clean out his lung. It's an extremely scary surgery but my grandpa wants to do it. Before the cancer they were putting it off because of his age and the seriousness of the surgery. The Dr who found the cancer was going to do the surgery and of course when he found the cancer, he couldn't and referred him to the Oncologist. I can't say how glad we are that my grandpa went to see that Dr.
